Travel in Europe: transports in a nutshell
Date: 11/04/2007

Travelers have lots of options for getting around the European old continent. Europe Travelers has selected a short list of main low fares airlines, buses networks and European railroads to help visitors finding their best transport solution:

By planes:

Introduction from the European Commission:

Creating a single European market in air transport has meant lower fares and a wider choice of carriers and services for passengers. The EU has also created a set of rights to ensure air passengers are treated fairly.

- Air passenger rights

As an air passenger you have certain rights when it comes to information about flights and reservations, damage to baggage, delays and cancellations, denied boarding, compensation in the case of accident or difficulties with package holidays. These rights apply to scheduled and chartered flights, both domestic and international, from an EU airport or to an EU airport from one outside the EU, when operated by an EU airline.

The EU also maintains a list of airlines banned from operating in the EU and using EU airports. For disabled passengers or those with reduced mobility, rules are being progressively introduced to ensure free and effective assistance on aircraft and in EU airports as well as fair and non-discriminatory treatment.

If you have a complaint, contact the airline or organiser of the package holiday. If they fail to fulfil their obligations then you should complain to your national enforcement body.

- Security

Avoid the delay and inconvenience of having something confiscated by airport security by checking that you do not have any prohibited articles with you. There is an agreed EU list of items that are not allowed in the cabin on flights from EU airports and a list of articles banned from the baggage hold. Look out for these lists displayed in the check-in area.

New regulations have been introduced concerning the liquids that passengers can carry past airport screening points in their hand baggage. The liquids (including creams, gels, toothpaste, sprays, perfume) must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml. They must be packed into one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of not more than 1 litre capacity. Exceptions are made for medicines and baby food needed during a trip. Passengers are allowed liquids such as drinks and perfumes bought in the departure area. Limits on the size of cabin baggage are also being introduced.

- Ryanair

Ryanair was Europe’s original low fares airline and is still one of Europe’s leading low fares carrier.

- EasyJet

EasyJet is a Pan European Company being one of the leading low cost airlines. It offers low cost flights and hotels online booking services.

- British Airways

British Airways is a global airline, offering low fares with an extensive global route network flying to and from centrally located airports.

By Buses

- Eurolines

Eurolines is one of the largest regular coach network of Europe.

- Busabout

By trains

According to Wikipedia and its article about Rail travel in Europe, "Trains are a convenient mode of short, medium and long distance travel across Europe. Western and central Europe has a dense and widely used railway network spanning the entire continent." Also the quality, speed and price of train travel depends on the country, Western European countries generally offering higher speed and more luxurious trains at higher prices than Eastern European countries. When bought on the spot, trains tickets can be more expensive than cheap flights over the same distance, but this difference may disappear when the tickets are booked in advance. Not to forget the costs to get to the airport.

- Introduction by the European Commission:

The EU has 210 000 km of railways with extensive international passenger services. There are high-speed lines in several countries with trains reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h and the network is being extended this year with new links in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Huge financial support is going into trans-European projects such as the rail links from Lyon to Poland’s border with the Ukraine, from Berlin to Palermo, from Paris to Bratislava and from Warsaw to Helsinki.

One way to explore Europe by rail is to get an international rail pass and set off to discover the places and countries that attract you.

- Rail Europe

Rail Europe is the leading authority of European rail representing more than 35 European railroads.
